David gave a recap of the COPAA student session with practicing anthropologists.

1. Introductions made

2. Welcomed new departments into COPAA: New Mexico State University, U. of Copenhagen, U. North Carolina, Charlotte, and Missouri State U.

3. Lisa covered COPAA sessions at SfAA

  • Linda discussed the Saturday session for promotion and tenure for COPAA, CoPAPIA to find out which of the resources developed to assist with tenure and promotion are actually being utilized by people
  • Susan said we’re not sure how the development of applied programs at universities are being considered in tenure and promotion at universities – we need to get AAA informed about this issue

4. Highlights of the Treasurer’s report:

  • This year we got Square so people can pay with credit card for university member dues
  • It would be useful to follow-up with university members to make sure we’re in contact with correct person to collect dues. (This is an ongoing issue – chairs change, departments change over time)
  • There is a type-o on the treasurer’s report. The end balance for 03-18-14 is $5,373.72, not $57,373.72 (unfortunately!, ha ha)

5. Student report:

Lumi is the new student rep for COPAA.

  • She gave a personal introduction and discussed some of her vision for the student rep position and short and long-term goals for developing applied focuses in European universities. Her current research site is in Brazil

6. Visiting Fellow Program and Practitioner Funding:

  • This program allows your department to bring someone (academic or practitioner) to a COPAA department to make some contribution (workshops, teaching, research).
  • Linda talked about the visiting fellow to her institution for the 35th anniversary of their school’s applied program – they fit it in with a major event that they were sponsoring.
  • U of Kansas won a fellowship for this year. Congratulations!
  • Now the visiting fellow applications will be done every other year – and we moved the deadline for applications to May
  • We will perhaps sponsor a session on this program for next year’s SfAA, now that we have four schools that have had a visiting fellow
    • Call for visiting fellow program application will go out now too, and the award will fund from the Summer 2015 to 2016
  • We don’t have enough practitioners at SfAA or AAA, it is too expensive for people who are not members or affiliated with universities (especially AAA)
  • Lisa suggests scholarships to help defray costs for practitioners
    • we can offer some assistance for practitioners who may want to participate in any COPAA sessions at SfAA or AAA next year. We would invite practitioners and give them scholarships for SfAA in 2015
    • We should put out the call for this now (listserv) to start planning for Pittsburg

7. New Webmaster:

  • Christiana Wasson is the outgoing Webmaster. We thank her for her service and excellent management of the web site
  • Jeremy Spoon reviewed the web site this year, gave suggestions. He can’t do Webmaster now because he’s about to go on sabbatical
  • We opened the discussion to find someone to do the role for the next two years

Christina described the position:

  • Christina started in 2004 (10 years of service!)
    • Students were the neediest group identified at first (need information for schools, jobs, etc.)
    • Developed first website in 2005
  • It’s time now to refresh the website – things have changed. It would benefit from fresh eyes – we have asked people usually once a year to review it to give their insight
    • Technology has changed a lot, but user needs have not really changed – they have the same questions (how do I develop a career?) – and the web site needs to address these user needs
    • Susan says they’re developing a new capstone at her institution – it might be nice to look at what capstones in training undergrads for applied anthropology can look like – we can share syllabi and resources between each other through the web site
      • Crosslinking is useful to do
    • We need to transfer the files for the Website from Christina’s university. New Webmaster must find a host for these files
      • Server policies vary from university to university, which can be an issue for hosting files and domain names
      • Perhaps a practitioner could do this service, rather than a university member. This person could possibly get some money to come to SfAA and reimburse them for this service – it would also attract a practitioner to COPAA
      • A junior practitioner too, if they’re at a COPAA institution is a possibility
      • We could approach known people first, and if that doesn’t work, we can put an open call out to practitioners
        • Sheri Briller has a person in mind from her institution

8.Elizabeth Briody’s new proposal:

  • Put together a small working group of faculty, students, and practitioners
    • Identify evidence-based best practices in existing applied programs
    • Offer alternative ways to implement best practices in programs
    • Create general template for program offerings, networks, resources
      • Ensure general template can be adapted to various subfields
  • Susan says she’s not sure who would take that on. And also, she feels that’s what COPAA is already organized to do. Susan suggests informing Elizabeth that this is already the goal of COPAA
    • Perhaps we could post summaries of these kinds of activities on the web site
    • Perhaps we can profile departments on the Web site so there’s visibility of this work that is already being done
      • Students could write about their own programs (undergrad or grad) – could make You Tube videos and give us the link to post on the Website
      • Lumi volunteered to write a call for this and head up organizing submissions. David may be able to help her with this?

9. Co-chairs:

  • Outgoing chair Lisa Henry has been asked to be NAPA president (currently serves as NAPA secretary). We thanked her for her four years of service as a COPAA chair!
  • Sherri Briller is an incoming co-chair, welcome, Sherri!
  • Co-chairs are to be a three-year term, with old and new rotating out one at a time

    • Sherri Briller (2014-2017)
